The Customer – Paul Smith

Sir Paul Smith is Britain’s foremost designer. He is renowned for his creative aesthetic, which combines tradition and modernity. Positioned between high fashion and formalwear, while taking reference from both, Paul Smith’s designs always stand apart.

Famous for its clothing and accessories collections, Paul Smith specialises in an inventive use of traditional craftsmanship and cutting-edge design to create beautifully made, desirable, modern pieces.

The British fashion company was founded in 1970 by Paul Smith, and has expanded into over 70 countries, selling its products via standalone stores, departments in high-end stores or malls, along with airport terminals, as well as the e-commerce section of its international website.

Reaffirming the values that Paul set down in 1970, ‘classic with a twist’ remains the guiding principle of the company.

The Project

The BCP team were tasked with building two bespoke tables that would evoke the trademark stripes for Paul Smith’s new flagship store located in Coal Drops Yard – a new shopping centre situated in Kings Cross, London.

The shopping centre, which opened to the public in October 2018, was created by converting and extending two 19th-century coal warehouses that were built to store and transfer coal, delivered by rail from northern England, across London. Coal Drops Yard contains 9,290 square metres of shops and restaurants, arranged inside the linear two buildings on either side of a central space.

The project was a real challenge due to the length of the tables and the customer’s requirement for minimal visual support. It required the BCP team to work closely with the customer to skilfully develop and manufacture a three metre and a four and a half metre long table.

Made of aluminium honeycomb, both tables are one metre wide creating a high visual aspect ratio. Before being fitted in the store they were painted by BCP’s Milton Keynes based partner company, SCC Coatings whose business involves painting trains – an appropriate twist for the location.

The tables are now a key feature in the store and are currently being used to display a variety of Paul Smith’s signature designs.

Feedback

“I would like to take this opportunity on behalf of myself and Mark McKay at Paul Smith Ltd to say a thank you to BCP and Encocam Ltd for supplying and installing our tables at Coal Drop’s Yard. An acknowledgement to all involved on the project, particularly during the final weeks of development and last minute problem solving on the workshop floor. As without this, we would not have realized the final product we have in our shop. The tables have received compliments aplenty all round. I certainly would like to keep in touch for any future projects of similar nature, now knowing BCP’s capabilities and services.”
